Undulate Rays (Raja undulata) are a species of skate that can be found around the outer coasts of the UK. They are currently classed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to threats from fishing activity. The Undulate Ray is identified a priority species on the UK Biodiversity Action Plan.
Appearance
These skates have beautiful dark band markings along the tops of their bodies which helps them to be distinguished from the other types of rays we have at the aquarium.
Biology
Rays are related to sharks and share many of the same characteristics such as having a body made out of cartilage, rough skin made from dermal denticles (or ‘skin teeth’) to give them an aerodynamic advantage in the water, and gill slits to breathe.
Rays have small openings called spiracles above their eyes on top of their body which allows them to breathe if they are sitting on the floor.
